How did you hear about Snap36?
I initially heard about Snap36 early in 2016 when I was working as a freelance photographer in Indianapolis. I came across a job posting on Indeed looking for a photographer available for contract work nearby Indy. I sent in my resume and a link to my website and I received a call back later that afternoon. A few weeks later I started my first project for Snap36.
What was your first project at Snap36?
The first project I worked on was for Hill-Rom, where we shot a variety of parts for hospital beds. It was a great job to start on because I really learned the equipment since we used both the wide and narrow glass table robots, along with a platform robot as well. I had the opportunity to shoot and learn all three systems in the process of the project.
What did you study in college?
I studied engineering at Purdue University for my undergraduate degree along with taking a number of studio art and design classes. Then, I went on to take some graduate coursework in video production and post-production afterwards. They seem rather unrelated but it ended up being a perfect combination for starting as a photographer at Snap36.
What has been your favorite on-site project?
My favorite on-site project was a combination job for Walmart and The RealReal — given that I got to spend two weeks in California in early April. A week in Los Angeles followed by a week in San Francisco are definitely a nice change of pace from the cold and wet Midwest spring weather.
What is your favorite activity or hobby to do in your free time?
I have a couple of side projects that I’m involved in that take up a good portion of my free time. But on top of that, being kind of new to Chicago still, I like exploring the neighborhoods and finding new restaurants or bars that I haven’t yet been to.
Where is your favorite travel spot?
I’ve always been very much into snowboarding growing up – I learned when I was in elementary school. In my time working as a freelancer, I spent a full winter in Breckenridge. There definitely aren’t as many opportunities to go snowboarding in Chicago, so I try to make it out there as much as possible. Plus, I have a brother who lives in Denver now so I’ll take the opportunity to go on a trip to Colorado any time I get the chance.
What was the last TV show you watched?
The last TV show I watched was “I’m Dying Up Here” on Showtime. I actually watched every episode, it was awesome. It’s produced by Jim Carey and is about people trying to make it as a stand-up comedian in the 70’s in LA. The pilot episode is awesome and really had me hooked.
What is your favorite holiday and why?
I’m not sure if it counts as a holiday, but I always loved Halloween growing up. Since my birthday is November 1st, it always felt like I got two holidays back-to-back, and always made Halloween parties more fun.
What do you look forward to in 2019?
I counted it up the other day, and in the last 3 years I’ve moved 6 times working as a freelancer. So what I’m really looking forward to in 2019 is getting more grounded in Chicago. Now that I’ve been here about a year-and-a-half, I have had the opportunity to get to know the place. I am excited to not move to a completely new city again for quite a while.
What has been your favorite memory at Snap36?
About a month after I started full-time at Snap36, I got the opportunity to travel to Prague for a week for work. Given that I had never been there, it was pretty exciting and a great first experience at Snap36. It was cool to see and work in the office of our partner company PhotoRobot. Also being able to spend time with locals who knew places away from the tourist attractions was a great experience.
